The Healing Power of The Arts

At Parikh Giving Alliance, we are focused on creating meaningful community impact by empowering nonprofits to operate at their most inspired potential. In fulfillment of our mission, we provide essential funding to Central Florida organizations making notable contributions to issues related to healthcare, education, and the arts. It is our belief that by creating opportunities for nonprofits to work better together, we can accelerate the changes that transform lives. Through initiatives like our Collaboration Circles, we bring together community leaders, nonprofit professionals, and creative thinkers to share insights, explore new ideas, and strengthen the collective impact of their work.

On October 7, 2025, Parikh Giving Alliance hosted “The Healing Power of the Arts: Fostering Community Wellness Through Creative Expression” — a thought-provoking Collaboration Circle that explored the connection between creativity and well-being. The discussion brought together three women who are shaping the arts landscape in Central Florida, each offering a unique lens on how creative expression can support mental health, personal growth, and community connection.

“Art connects us to what makes us human — it transcends barriers, heals hearts, and builds bridges between people and communities. We are deeply grateful to Jennifer, Gisela, and Marsha for sharing their wisdom and to all who joined this important conversation.” — Beena M. Parikh, PhD, Co-Founder, Parikh Giving Alliance

Jennifer Evins, President & CEO of United Arts of Central Florida, opened the conversation by sharing how the arts are a proven bridge to wellness, empathy, and community strength. She spoke about how United Arts fuels hundreds of creative programs across the region — from murals that revitalize neighborhoods to theatre and dance programs that nurture emotional expression. Jennifer emphasized that engagement in the arts is not simply entertainment; it’s a vital part of community health, improving social connection and creating a sense of belonging for all ages.

Dr. Gisela Carbonell, Curator of the Rollins Museum of Art, reflected on the museum’s evolving role as a place of healing and dialogue. She described how carefully curated exhibitions can invite reflection and mindfulness, offering visitors quiet space to connect with their emotions and with one another. Gisela shared examples of how the Rollins Museum integrates educational programming and inclusive design to make art more accessible — showing that museums can serve as both cultural and emotional sanctuaries.

Marsha Lorenz, President & CEO of Seniors First, Inc., rounded out the discussion with insights on creative aging — programs that use music, storytelling, and the visual arts to enrich the lives of older adults. She highlighted that creativity supports not just joy, but cognitive health, social engagement, and overall well-being. Marsha’s organization is a leader in helping seniors maintain independence and purpose, and her reflections underscored how the arts play an essential role in sustaining vitality at every stage of life.

Moderated by Beena M. Parikh, PhD, Co-Founder of Parikh Giving Alliance, the session wove together stories, research, and practical strategies for bringing the arts into community work. Dr. Parikh guided an engaging conversation about how nonprofits can integrate creative approaches into programs that address isolation, trauma, and accessibility — themes that resonated strongly with participants.

As the discussion concluded, one shared truth stood out: creativity heals. Whether through brushstrokes, melodies, or shared experiences, the arts help us process emotions, foster empathy, and remind us of our shared humanity.

The Parikh Giving Alliance extends heartfelt thanks to Jennifer, Gisela, Marsha, and all who joined the discussion for helping illuminate the profound connection between art and well-being in our community.
